RIP, Julie Faagau - (May 1st 1963 – August 10th 2009)

At about 12:10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, GLASA lost its MVP. League commissioner Julie Faagau, an amazing woman with a huge heart and matching smile, talented player, tremendous friend and teammate and all-around softball advocate, has passed away. She was 46.

Fuji, her partner of the past 15 months, said her mother, Vai, was present to ease Julie’s transition to a better place with no pain and suffering.

As a way to pay tribute to Julie and her spirit, the Commission voted Feb. 21 to establish the Julie Faagau Spirit Award.

This is a monetary award granted to one team each from A / B, C and D divisions at the close of Summer Season.

Any registered member of GLASA may nominate a Team for this award. Nominations should be in the form of a written essay (300 to 500 words) which best describes examples of excellence displayed by a team.

The criteria for the award is based on the characteristics that best exemplify Julie Faagau’s dedication to and participation in GLASA, her spirit of sportswomanship, and the respect and camaraderie shown towards all players coaches, managers, and umpires.

Essays must be submitted to the League Secretary no later than one (1) week prior to the last scheduled summer season coaches/managers meeting.

Award voting will be by secret balloting by the Executive Board and all team representatives. Each Executive officer and team representative will have one (1) vote on each divisional nomination.

The three (3) teams with the most votes will receive a $200 award towards their Winter season team registration of that same year. This award cannot be postponed to any other playing season.

All written essays and announced Julie Faagau award recipients will be posted on the GLASA Women’s Web site.
